Self Reliance *Values of Care and Patience*

Hello, I am now going to present the two values of care and patience, and try to see how they apply to the story of Self Reliance. In the story, the author talks a lot about the importance of people not as part of a group but only as an individual, and how these kind of people need to start thinking independently. He also talks a lot about not caring for what does not concern or affect you, and not letting other’s opinions change you. When talking about other people, he says that the most important thing is to ignore those who judge us for living independently, not caring for what society thinks and learn how to estimate a sour face, in the words of the author. Here is where the value of care is shown. You should not care that much for them, or others opinions, because that is one of the biggest aspects of self reliance, only trusting your opinion and learning how to lean on yourself when others don't want to. Caring for what other’s think just affects the way you make a decision and you get influenced by what is supposed to be the popular choice, and you end up only doing things to please others and not what you truly desire. Self reliance teaches us to care about what we want, trusting what we want and not needing others to do it, it also teaches us to care for ourselves and decide what is best for us, when we need to be thinking about our own well being. The other value we have to study and compare to Self Reliance is patience. For me, patience is seen in this essay as something you should have with others, especially the people we just talked about, the kind of person who judges or tries to control you. Another aspect of patience that i see in this essay is that humans should have patience with themselves, because becoming self reliant is very hard and you have to bear with their comments and horrible looks. Using a piece of the article i will explain this point “It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude…” this expresses that becoming self reliant means you will suffer from a very lonely period in which you feel neglected by other people and even yourself, so having enough patience to be able to bear this is very crucial if someone wants to learn self reliance. Being a self reliant person is very important for a person’s character because the reality is that we won't depend on other people forever, and having a someone we can rely on at all times, and thats someone has to be yourself. Caring for other’s opinions isn't healthy and having patience with yourself is very important.
